5451.01 - SENIOR SCHOLAR
The Board of Education authorizes a system of senior recognition, known as the Senior Scholar Award, by using student grade point average and cumulative ACT score.
Students will be recognized as Honor Roll Graduates (3.0 or higher), Cum Laude 3.3 - 3.59, Magna Cum Laude 3.6 - 3.89, Summa Cum Laude 3.9 or higher, and as Senior Scholars (utilizing the GPA and ACT formula listed below). The Board encourages students to take challenging courses.
Beginning with the Class of 2012, the high school will utilize the same formula for selecting students for top academic honors that has been used in the past to determine Academic All-State candidates.
The formula consists of a point system that takes into consideration the student's GPA and ACT score. All high school students are expected to take the ACT test as part of the Michigan Merit Exam, unless the student qualifies for additional options under Section 504 or the Individuals with Disabilities Act.
Should a student take both the ACT and SAT tests, the score that awards the student the higher number of points will be used for the purpose of this policy. If the State of Michigan approves a change in formula for the above tests, the formula will be adjusted to reflect the change. (Example: GPA 4.0 X 250 = 1000 points + ACT score of 36 X 27.778 = 1000 points for a total of 2000 points.)
Class rank will continue to be calculated for college enrollment purposes only. A cut score for Senior Scholar Awards will be established at 1600.
Students who choose not to take either the ACT or SAT will not be considered for a Senior Scholar Award.
