3411 - PLACEMENT ON SALARY SCHEDULE

The Board of Education retains the authority to specify the salary of new teaching positions and to determine the credit to be awarded for placement on the District's teacher salary schedule, in accordance with any applicable terms in the negotiated agreement.

In determining eligible credit for teaching and military experience years, the Superintendent shall consider the following:

 A.Years of teaching service in the same school district or educational service center, regardless of training level, with each year consisting of at least 120 days under a teacher's contract.

 B.Years of teaching service as a licensed teacher in a chartered, nonpublic school in Ohio or in another public school, regardless of training level, with each year consisting of at least 120 days under a teacher's contract.

 C.Years in a chartered school or institution or a school or institution that subsequently became chartered or a chartered, special-education program or a special-education program that became chartered operated by the State or by a subdivision or other local government unit of this State as a licensed teacher, regardless of training level; each year must consist of at least 120 days.

 D.Years of active military experience which must be eight (8) continuous months of service to be recognized as a year of authorized experience.

Credit may be given for substitute teaching in the North Canton City School District if the teacher taught at least 120 days in the same assignment

The Superintendent may authorize service credit for past service in:

 A.a private school located in any other state or U.S. territory;

 B.an overseas dependent school operated by the U.S. Armed Forces;

 C.a school approved by the State Department of Education and operated by a State Agency;

 D.a college, university, or related work experience.

New staff members who have been licensed by the State to perform professional services in the public and nonpublic schools of Ohio, but who have not yet earned a baccalaureate degree, shall be placed on the initial step of the salary schedule, unless the Superintendent determines a different placement is appropriate based on the provisions of this policy.

In the absence of collective bargaining agreement language or an express contractual provision to the contrary, teachers employed by the Board who previously retired from the District and/or who have previous teaching experience in the District must be credited with the appropriate number of such years of service on the salary schedule upon re-employment.
