5335 - MANAGING PEANUT AND OTHER LIFE-THREATENING FOOD ALLERGIES

The Board of Education recognizes the need to protect the rights of all students with food allergies so students can fully participate in all school programs and extra-curricular activities. In accordance with State and Federal statutes, reasonable accommodations, modifications, and interventions will be provided pursuant to the Individual Health Care Plan or 504 Plan to reduce the likelihood of life-threatening allergic reactions during school or school sponsored activities. In compliance with USDA Child and Nutrition Division Guidelines, the Board will also substitute meals to food-allergic students based upon a prescriber’s signed statement.

The Superintendent/designee, in consultation with school nurses, school employees, parents, students, community members, and school volunteers, will develop administrative guidelines to ensure proper implementation of this policy. The guidelines shall address the identification of students with food allergies, the development of an individual health care plan and the development of staff strategies to prevent, manage, recognize, and treat allergic reactions, including the means of communication of this information to staff.

The Board will provide professional training and/or support for staff related to this policy.

All information regarding student identification, health care management, and emergency care shall be safeguarded as personally identifiable information in accordance with Board Policy 8330 and Policy 8350.
