TEXTBOOK ADOPTION PROCEDURE
According to Dexter Board of Education Policy 2510, a "textbook" shall mean the principle source of instructional material for any given course of study, in whatever form the material may be presented, that is available or distributed to every student enrolled in the course.
| A. | Teachers/Principal/Department Level |

| | 1. | Teachers, department chairpersons, principals or other staff members may initiate the discussion of need for a new text. |
|
| | 2. | The department chairperson or other staff member should contact the curriculum consultant for information, samples, and resources. |
|
| B. | Teacher/Administrator Textbook Review Committee |
|
| | 1. | The department chairperson or grade level chairperson will be responsible for organizing the Textbook Review Committee. |
|
| | 2. | The Textbook Review Committee will be made up of teachers, building administrators, curriculum consultant(s), representatives from other buildings that may be affected by the change, and parents. The Review Committee will review potential texts and recommend the text to be adopted. |

| | 3. | The department chairperson or grade level chairperson will complete the Textbook Review Criteria template. |
|
| | 1. | The building principal will be responsible for contacting parents and community members to be on the Community Focus Group. This group which should have a minimum of five (5) parents and/or community members will convene for the purpose of reviewing this textbook only. It will not be a standing committee that is responsible for every textbook adoption in that building. |
|
| | 2. | Two weeks before meeting – Copies of the textbook samples will be made available to the Community Focus Group at the school building. |
|
| | 3. | District personnel will set up the Community Focus Group meeting of parents, community members, principal, curriculum consultant(s), and teachers to review the textbook. The comments and discussion of the Community Focus Group will be used by the Textbook Review Committee to determine if the textbook adoption will proceed. The Community Focus Group will not have veto power in the textbook adoption process. This group will only provide comments and discussion. |

| D. | Board of Education Approval |
|
| | 1. | Two (2) weeks before the Board meeting, the Textbook Review Committee will provide the textbook to Board members. |
|
| | 2. | The Textbook Review Committee will make a presentation to the Board of Education for the purpose of formally adopting the textbook. If the Board of Education chooses to adopt the textbook, the building principal, or the department chairperson will order the books. |

Books that are required to go through Textbook Adoption Procedure:
| A. | All textbooks for new courses. |
|
| B. | New editions of textbooks currently being used, if the new edition is five (5) years newer than the old edition. |
|
