2432 - DRIVER EDUCATION

The District has established the following requirements for any District student to be eligible for participation in the State of Michigan's driver education program which consists of the following:

Segment 1

The required twenty-four (24) hours of classroom instruction will be provided. The minimum six-hour (6) behind-the-wheel instruction shall be offered. To be eligible to enroll in this segment, a student must have reached the age of fourteen (14) years and eight (8) months, passed an eye examination, and be able to attend all of the scheduled classroom sessions.

Upon successful completion of the two-phase instruction, the student will be issued the white card which s/he takes to the Secretary of State to receive a Level 1 drivers' license. In addition, the student must have reached the age of fourteen (14) years and nine (9) months.

Segment 2

The second segment of the driver-education course will consist of six (6) hours of classroom instruction for students (1) who have successfully completed segment #1; (2) have fifty (50) hours behind-the-wheel experience, including at least ten (10) hours at night. Upon completion of the classroom instruction and proper documentation that the behind-the-wheel training has been properly completed, the District will issue the green card to the student satisfying these conditions.

Road Test

Before a student may receive a Level 2 drivers' license, s/he must pass a road test offered by an agency authorized by the Secretary of State. The fee for this road test is the responsibility of the student and his/her parents and not an obligation of the District.

Scheduling

The principal will be responsible for establishing the schedule for classes in both segments of the program. The schedule should also provide information on enrollment and enrollment priorities all of which are to be given to eligible students and their parents.

Costs and Fees

The principal is responsible for determining the District's costs for providing driver education. Costs are to include instructor fees based on the hourly rate multiplied by the required number of hours, vehicle costs including fuel, maintenance, insurance, and any rental fees. The costs are then to be reviewed by the Superintendent.
